SALEM, OR – Today, Oregon Freedom Coalition (OFC) is proud to announce it will partner with several initiative petitions to further tax reform in Oregon. OFC, through No Tax Oregon, will be partnering with End the Death Tax (IP 51) the effort to eliminate Oregon’s estate tax.

Oregon is one of only 12 states that still levies an estate tax, a burden that can force families to move or restructure their lives simply to protect what they’ve built. Furthermore, Oregon’s $1 million threshold for the estate tax, set in 2002, is the lowest in the nation. Today, with high median home prices in Oregon, that threshold is met far more often than at any point in Oregon’s history, meaning more and more Oregonians are paying taxes upon the death of a family member each year.

Representative Kevin Mannix, one of the Chief Petitioners on IP 51, explained why he and the other Chief Petitioners decided to start the IP:

Ending the Oregon Estate Tax—we call it the Death Tax—promises Oregonians that their families and businesses will not face another tax upon the death of a dear family member. We want Oregon to join the 38 other states which already eliminated estate taxes. This is for the benefit of families, our businesses, and our economy.

Rep. Mannix expressed excitement over the partnership with OFC and No Tax Oregon:

We are excited to partner with Oregon Freedom Coalition and their project No Tax Oregon, who have done a magnificent job of putting the gas tax/transportation fee increase referendum on the ballot. In 38 days, they gathered over 250,000 signatures. We are happy to partner with such a successful organization.

Nick Stark, Executive Director of Oregon Freedom Coalition and Director of No Tax Oregon, commented on the partnership and why sights were set on the estate tax:

No Tax Oregon has a simple mission: lowering Oregonians’ taxes one bad tax at a time. The estate tax was an obvious next target in our mission. It’s an unfair burden that gets placed on families that are already dealing with so much. Frankly, the estate tax is a cruel and unusual punishment for losing a loved one. It has to go, and we are excited to work with Representative Mannix and his team who have done a stellar job at laying the groundwork for us to defend grieving families.

No Tax Oregon will be organizing volunteers to help with IP 51 as well as other IPs that further the mission of tax reform. Those IPs will be announced in the coming weeks.
