SALEM, Ore. – Today, the largest tax increase in Oregon history died a quiet death in the Oregon House of Representatives. The $2 billion victory for Oregon’s working families was achieved thanks to the efforts of Oregon Freedom Coalition (OFC) and its pressure campaign, No Tax Oregon. HB2025, a $2 billion tax increase, failed to make it to the House floor for a final vote after it appeared to not have the 36 votes required to pass a tax increase through the House.
“I am proud of the work our organization did in protecting working Oregonians from this poorly thought out tax bill,” said OFC Executive Director Nick Stark. “No Tax Oregon was a new approach to fighting bad bills in Salem. The approach shows what the conservative movement can accomplish for Oregonians when it builds coalitions around policy issues. No Tax Oregon is simply the first step toward wholesale turnaround for our state.”
HB2025 was introduced in the last month of session in an attempt to pass the largest tax increase in Oregon history as quickly and with as little public scrutiny and opposition as possible. The whole process lacked transparency and demonstrated the consequences of nearly four decades of radical progressive control.
In response, OFC launched No Tax Oregon and its website, NoTaxOR.com, to give Oregonians a low barrier opportunity to voice their opposition directly to their lawmakers. As a result, OFC was able to activate 10,000 individuals who typically do not participate in the legislative process to write their lawmakers.
Stark noted that the lawmakers who received the most letters were those on the fence about their votes that needed to hear the voices of their constituents. “It goes to show that when lawmakers hear the voices of their constituents, they listen. Too often, Salem listens to the voices of special and fringe interests claiming to represent their constituents. OFC’s cut out the noise, let the people speak, made lawmakers listen, and stood ready to hold their feet to the fire if they didn’t. This strategy is what will save Oregon.”
