The OFC Blank Check Report #4
My Fellow Oregonian,
Last year, Oregonians learned that their governor and legislature operate under the assumption that they have been given a blank check of authority to govern. During the regular session, Governor Kotek and her legislative allies tried to ram a transportation tax and fee increase down Oregonian’s throats. Thanks to a well organized campaign from No Tax Oregon, a project of OFC, Oregonians were able to make their voices heard. While this initially stopped the first iteration of these transportation tax and fee increases, somehow the message was still unclear that our lawmakers need to be more attentive to the will of the People.
It’s been almost a year since legislators passed the gas tax increase during an “emergency” session. That increase was opposed by thousands of Oregonians and our lawmakers were repeatedly warned not to pass it.
At the time, arrogance and ego led much of the political establishment to believe that the People would not succeed in standing up for themselves. But you and hundreds of thousands of Oregonians showed up in droves to prove them wrong. As a result, you bounced their blank check by beating the odds and defeating the increases 83% to 17% in May.
Shocked though they were, it’s unlikely Salem takes this to heart. That’s why OFC is dedicated to partnering with you and thousands of Oregonians like you to constantly send Salem a reminder that if the People aren’t heard in the legislature, we will be heard on the ballot through initiative petitions.
Over the next several weeks, OFC will be informing you on how to stay engaged with us in the fight. For now, share this newsletter with family and friends and ask them to sign up to receive updates. And stay tuned. We’ll need your help soon..
God Bless,
